Douro, wine, Porto, wedding in Douro

We chose to get married in Portugal as Jean-Philippe’s parents are Portuguese. We fell in love with the Aquapura Hotel deep in the Douro wine valley. The theme for our wedding was inspired by the valley and we used the color purple, to symbolize the wine, in different areas and created special grape motifs for our wedding favors.

My dress was by Alexander McQueen, one of my favorite UK design houses. The wedding dress was so simple yet so interesting. It was ‘princessy’ yet edgy and slightly gothic. It was everything I dreamt it would be! My groom wore a wonderful Dior Tuxedo. The shade of grey was spot on and quite an unexpected choice! We were very lucky to find very similar tuxedos for the groomsmen. The differentiation between groom and groomsmen was enhanced by using different colored bow ties. White for the groom and black for the groomsmen.

The bridesmaids wore Notte by Marchesa. I wanted them to also look pretty but fashion forward, which is why we pinned their hair up into really high editorial buns!

What was your first dance and how did you choose the song?

Our first dance was hilarious. I don’t really like first dances as I think they are really awkward and forced. Soooo, we decided to do something completely different! A bunch of my girlfriends and I danced a specially choreographed dance to ‘single ladies’ by Beyonce. It was hilarious and Jean-Philippe joined in the end. The next song was upbeat and as so, many people were already on the dance floor!

Do you have any advice for couples currently planning their wedding?

Make sure you have fun while you are doing it. It can be quite stressful but it’s always important to take a step back and remember the most important thing: that you are marrying the love of your life and that is all that matters. No matter what happens on the day, you will be married in the end, so it will definitely be a success!
